Papercutting – 19th January 2021

The art of paper cutting (jiǎnzhǐ 剪纸) in China may date back to the second century CE (source Wikipedia). They are used as decorations for festivals and celebrations, and as such are often cut from red paper. The main cutting tools are simple: paper and scissors or an engraving knife, but a little skill is required to make the three-dimensional scenes using only cuts. They are usually cut out in monochrome, so paper cutters must be imaginative and carefully delete secondary parts of the image to make the key features stand out. Paper cuts are bold and abstract artworks.

In this session we had a number of templates to try and a few of us went off off-piste and made our own bees! (above)
